Lou's skillful writing and extraordinary memory was putting me in the picture through the words in the events described, i could feel my heart was racing while experiencing the escape and survival of Lou's Father-Lino during the horrific WWII, i could sense the despair and hunger, and the utmost joy when a small relief came along the way... i believe it was a relief from 'above'. Miraculously, Lino (Lou's father) life was saved many times, when the allies bombed the convoy he was about to forced on, then again when he remained out of a farm house that food was given by hospitable people, later to be slaughtered by the Germans. He managed to survive extreme hunger and keep high spirit not losing himself to the war terrible affect on human psych. Lou shares with the reader as well his own experiences as a child growing up inside the life created for him by Clelia (Mother) and Lino, the sun in the garden in Verona, and 'La Befana' . You can smell the steamy fresh breads while entering to the Bakeries the family was operating. 'La Mano'- The hand. Appears twice in this book, once in the beginning and once when it rested on the shoulder of Clelia, marking the beginning of the upturn and blossom of the beautiful family of 11 children, and 20 Grandchildren. Love it, want more. Loved the pictures along with the story. How very interesting to see where all the different Italian familes moved to in the USA when they came to our country. Sometimes it was who they knew not what they knew and the other way around.
I learned a lot about what went on during World War II in Italy and why so many came to America after the war. Italy was much more tattered after the war then I realized. I also did not know the torment people went through with so many sides to take in the war. This is a story of one man creating an amazing family from nothing. He was persistant, hard working and loving. But none of it was easy!
A touching story of how a family is dragged into WW2 of which they have no own interest at all. The story is repeated in Ukraine today and the only purpose is to destabilize regions and then for the elite and banksters to buy properties and shares etc for cents per dollar as well as creating debts and run away with the money as in Greek..
A deep insight into Lou Baldin's family roots with a hint or two of the belying paranormal world we are all a part of.

I've read this great book a few times, it's a eye opening account of post WW2 Italy and immigration to America. Lots of good laughs too, the author is a funny guy!
For me, it helps learning the background of book authors. Lou Baldin's family story is filled with trials and challenges in his early ages as well as the immigration process to America. Then working on establishing a new home in a strange land and new language. All this sets the tone for his other novels with lifes adventure stories, including those "out of this world" adventures. Highly resommended reading. Relatively short, so you can dig right in..
